The story, character, and nations in-game took inspiration from exeisting news and events but do not represent any counterpart in reality.
Introduction:
'Truth' can be bought, 'Verity' can be hired. This game is a satire to the bias and hypocrisy of online media and the division among people caused by them.
The Hired Verity is an attempt to communicate ideas through simulative game mechanics. The player will be placed in the role of a public relations operator and experience the process of leading the public tendency to the customers' favor as well as the moral dilemma on the way through a simple yet metaphorical simulation of the job.
Mini Game Rule Explanation:
After the monthly news selection, you will be led into a mini-game representing the actual process of opinion manipulation.
If you skipped the tedious introduction given by your boss, here's a shorter version.
Your goal is to bring the supporting opinion of the target group down to at least 40% before the time run out.
The target's support drops every time a 'bullet' hits one of the target nodes. 'Bullets' from the target nodes will collide and vanish with those originating from friendly nodes.
There are two ways to break through public opinion. One is simply hiring extra astroturfers ( 50 funds per time) which will double your fire rate in 10 seconds.
The other way is to divide people by their identity group through the flip card game on the top-right.
The basic rules are identical to regular memory games -- pairing up matching cards.
Each successfully matched pair will increase the defection bar. Once the bar is filled, people from different identity groups will attack each other for a while. But regular pairs will also cause the chaotic bar to increase. You will get a bad end if the bar is full by the endgame.
There is also a special rule: neutral cards can be matched with the group to 'support', doing so will increase the defection just as normal but with a lower price of chaotic. However, wrongly matching neutral to the group to 'suppress' will let to a penalty in target support.
The 'support' and 'suppress' targets can be found in the legend in the top-left corner.
